IN LOVING MEMORY OF MARIE SMITH

It is with great sadness to advise you that our very precious Marie Smith passed away on August 2, 2023.  Marie was born on June 29, 1939 in Iowa and joined the heavenly choir on August 2, 2023.  She was quite a woman, battling her polio in her younger years, followed by breast cancer in her later years and more recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that quickly spread to her liver.  She was as “soldier” with whatever trial she faced. Loved by everyone, she was never without a big smile, always spreading cheer and positivity wherever she went.

She grew up in Ashtabula, received a degree in education from Kent State and a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Akron.  She taught elementary school for several years before taking a break to raise children.  She did some school and community counseling after the kids were grown.  Marie enjoyed flower gardening, singing in the Church of the Lakes choir for over 60 years and A Chorus for a Cause for over 10 years.  Another very beautiful thing to remember Marie by is how much she loved to send hundreds of birthday, get-well, etc., cards to friends and relatives.  (It also included holidays – all of themSmile).

She was very active in two area post-polio groups – the North Canton group and the Akron group.  As the North Canton group started meeting less frequently, Marie made it a part of her regular schedule to come to the Akron group that never missed a meeting each month.  About the only time she missed a meeting was if she and her husband, Denny, were off traveling somewhere as they loved to travel the world together.  She always offered rides to anyone who wanted to go to a meeting and had no transportation.  Marie was always willing to share stories, some especially very funny ones to the group as she still had the “teacher in her” and what a great, very intelligent storyteller she was.  Marie often led the support group with games which brought great laughter and she also told some very interesting stories that always proved to be a learning experience to the attendees.

Marie is survived by her husband, Dennis, her daughter, Julie K. Smith, son, Douglas Smith, daughter-in-law, Marion, and grandson, Henry, as well as two sisters and two brothers.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to “A Chorus for A Cause achorusforacause.org. The Akron Post-Polio Support Group will be making a donation in her memory.  She will be greatly missed but remain forever in our hearts…she was a gem to know, a beautiful friend.
